More than eighty years ago the Nazis forced art collector Fritz Grunbaum to “liquidate” his art collection. Last week, the Manhattan DA’s office finally seized Egon Schiele’s works from three US Museums with the intent of returning them to Grunbaum’s heirs.
In Kill Brothers, (fictional) Hans Sternlicht’s children similarly sought to reclaim paintings stolen by the Nazis…they are still waiting.
Seemingly, museums and private collections throughout the world REMAIN reluctant to return pieces to their rightful owners.
Of course, the Nazis not only stole art from Jewish families. They also forced them to sell businesses. The story of the business taken from famed “Piano Man” Billy Joel’s grandfather is truly remarkable. The attached documentary, “the Joel Files” is extraordinary and most definitely worth watching.
