“Whoever saves one life, it is as if he has saved an entire world.” Source: Talmud; Sanhedrin 37a

In the novel “Kill Brothers,” the character Hans Sternlicht employs these powerful words from the Talmud to explain why he was compelled to intervene to save the life of an innocent woman who was being ruthlessly attacked. Indeed, it was a selfless act.

One could certainly take this wonderful teaching one step further.

During the Yom Kippur holiday, the wheelchair of a fellow seated near me was moved to allow room for the large crowd. The fellow who’s wheelchair had been removed searched to his left and then to his right, but could not find it. He became very concerned. It turns out that it had been stored in a coat room. I had seen it there when I arrived, so, I ran to get it for him. He was so incredibly grateful. In all honesty, I was almost embarrassed by his gratitude. After all, who would not try to help someone in his condition. But, a simple act of kindness can mean a great deal to the recipient.

Perhaps, we should all take a moment each day - when the opportunity presents itself - to perform one act of kindness. It will mean the world!

The attached youtube video is from an exceedingly touching scene from Schindler’s List, invoking Sanhedrin 37a.
